PROGRESSIVE. RELEVANT. SPIRITUALLY ALIVE.

About

Who We Are

We began with a log cabin in 1818. Since then, Richfield United Church of Christ has seen many changes.

We stood with slaves in the time of the Underground Railroad. We stood with women in the time of women’s suffrage. We are an "Open and Affirming" community, welcoming the LGBT community and all people with love and equality. We serve the poor. For over two hundred years we have stood and will stand for this singular and simple directive from Jesus: “Love one another.” This is our way, our truth, our life.

Here we practice, “Radical Hospitality.” It is the hospitality of Jesus whose ministry was about inclusion, not exclusion - service, not condemnation. It is in the coming together that we create intentional sacred space to allow God in with us.

Truly, no matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. Come, grow with us.

Open and Affirming Covenant

Our faith community welcomes persons of all ages, races, nationalities ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, mental and physical abilities, family structures, socioeconomic levels and political and theological backgrounds.

Our Statement of Faith

We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit, God of our Savior Jesus Christ and our God, and to your deeds we testify:

You call the worlds into being, create persons in your own image, and set before each one the ways of life and death.

You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.

You judge people and nations by your righteous will declared through prophets and apostles.

In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Savior, you have come to us and shared our common lot, conquering sin and death and reconciling the world to yourself.

You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races.

You call us into your church to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to be your servants in the service of others, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table, to join him in his passion and victory.

You promise to all who trust you forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, your presence in trial and rejoicing, and eternal life in your realm which has no end.

Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto you.

Amen.

The First Congregational Church Richfield, Ohio

Third church in the Western Reserve. Erected 1831. Dedication 1832.

Our History

In 1818, Richfield’s early settlers gathered in a log schoolhouse, which stood in the clearing a quarter of a mile southwest of the crossroads at East Richfield, for their church services. The schoolhouse was the only public building yet built in the town, and it served as church and town hall, as well as a school, social hall and at times a jail.

The Church of Christ, later called the Congregational Society was organized. In 1831 a church was begun and was dedicated in 1832. It was the third church in the Western Reserve. This building burned to the ground in 1886, but was rebuilt the very same year and served the congregation well until the spring of 1950 when it was declared unsafe for public meetings.
